Students tend t o report that, in seven years of university study, the best teaching has been found in law schools. Certainly, this is partly because law teachers give more attention to the classroom function than their university colleagues in graduate education, who tend t o concentrate more on research. Until someone successfully defines "success" in education, however, it is going to be difficult to identify teachers who are " b e t t e r " as legal educators than their less renowned colleagues.
After the middle of the 20th century, however, many studies of the possibility of claiming various kinds of special competence were started. Finally, in very recent years, a few states have started to authorize lawyers to announce that they are specializing in certain limited fields. The states are requiring the "specialists" to demonstrate their special competence, either through examinations or by reference to examples of extensive experience in the fields. " The barrier, however, has been broken, and lawyers are beginning to draw on the experience of the medical profession as they enter this dramatic new era of their profession.

" With all this turmoil concerning curriculum, teaching methods and growth, it is hardly surprising that lawyers and legal educators admit that they have no clear idea of what the students are supposed to be learning to do. Only this year, the American Bar Foundation has mounted a massive study of "What Lawyers D o , " for the purpose of enabling the law schools to decide what to teach, and how to teach it.
